Welcome to the award winning, Brian Wakefield memorial ground home of Bilborough Pelican football club. After three seasons in the Nottinghamshire Senior League we strived to obtain a place back in the Central Midlands football league after it’s recent re- organisation into north and south divisions.
After two highly successful seasons in the CML Supreme League, Pelican FC’s first team were forced to drop down to the CML Premier League for the 2005/06 season. This was due to the fact that the existing ground did not benefit from floodlights, which meant no further progression would have been possible for Pelican FC at that time.
In May 2005 Bilborough FC's senior committee members had discussions with the Pelican FC committee concerning the possibility of a merger between the two historical clubs. They reached agreement and the merger took place is May 2005. This important decision in the history of both clubs was not taken lightly, but there were considerable benefits in taking this route. From a Bilborough perspective the reasons for pursuing this merger were as follows:
The club were playing in a league well below the standard that the excellent facilities merited, particularly given the significant ground improvements programmed to commence in 2006. Whilst the Notts Amateur Alliance was undoubtedly run far more professionally and effectively than the old Notts Alliance and the East Midlands Senior League, the facilities enjoyed by the majority of clubs in the league has made it impossible for Bilborough to attract players of the standard required for progression, hence the rather mediocre season BFC had in 2004/05 measured against previous high standards.
For reasons known only to the Notts Senior League officials the application to join the NSL for the 2005/06 season was and there were no new places available for 2005/06 in the Central Midlands League. The merger allowed the two clubs to access the CML for the 2005/06 season, and the ground improvements gave the new club a platform to build on for further progression.
Now with one of the best grounds in the area and floodlights, Bilborough Pelican are seen as one of Nottinghamshire's most successful clubs, both at senior and youth level with the neighbouring colts.
Bilborough Pelican moved into the Nottinghamshire Senior Division for the 2007/08 season, winning the league the following year. The clubs ambitions were always to progress back into the CML or an equivalent league higher up the pyramid, when the football and finances were back on a higher footing. Now after a top six finish in their final NSL year , BPFC are back in the CMFL South division for 2011-12. To add to this we are set to re introduce a CMFL reserve side , an U21 side and several new youth sides.
We take on this season’s challenge with a revamped and dedicated club committee and an exciting group of managers, coaches and players. Ready to challenge for the 2011-12 Central Midlands South Division title.
